Where in the Netherlands did your ancestors come from?

Depending on your surname, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact region in the Netherlands that your ancestor may have come from. However, some Dutch surnames are regionally specific.

In North Holland there are many surnames that are one syllable and usually consist of only three letters. Some of these names are derived from Old Frisian male first names, such as Baas, Bak, Bal, Bas, Been, Bos, Bijl, Dam, Dek, Endt, Floor, Hein, Hes, Hof, Hol, Hop, Jut, Kat, Laan, Old, Pont and Yff.
